Although both home garment steamers and irons can help to organize clothes and remove wrinkles, they have some significant differences in usage, functions and applicable scenarios:
1. Working principle
Garment steamer: By generating steam, high-temperature moisture is used to penetrate into the fibers of clothing to relax wrinkles on the fibers. Steam is sprayed directly onto the surface of clothing through the nozzle on the hook or hanger without contacting the clothing.
Iron: By heating the flat surface at the bottom of the iron, the clothing is brought into contact with the hot iron plate, and the heat is directly applied to the fibers of the clothing to flatten the wrinkles. Usually, the iron needs to be in contact with the clothing.
2. Usage method
Garment steamer: Usually used in a hanging way, the clothing is hung on the hanger, and steam is sprayed onto the clothing without direct contact, which is suitable for quickly organizing clothing.
Iron: The clothing needs to be laid flat on the ironing board, and then the iron is smoothly slid back and forth on the surface of the clothing. Usually, the ironing process requires more operation and time.
3. Applicable clothing types
Garment steamer: Suitable for light and wrinkle-prone clothing. It can quickly remove wrinkles and is not easy to damage clothing. It is also suitable for hanging clothing, such as suits, dresses, etc.
Iron: More suitable for heavy clothing or clothing that requires higher temperatures, such as cotton shirts, jeans, etc. Irons work better for complex wrinkles or harder fabrics.
4. Convenience
Garment steamer: Generally lighter, simpler to operate, and no ironing board is required. Suitable for quickly organizing clothing when busy, especially for clothing that you don’t want to spend too much time preparing.
Iron: An ironing board is required, and the operation is relatively cumbersome. The iron needs to be in direct contact with the clothing, and it may take a long time to remove wrinkles.
5. Use time
Garment steamer: Usually heats up quickly, generally 1-2 minutes to start using, suitable for quick wrinkle removal.
Iron: It requires a certain amount of preheating time, and it may take several minutes to reach the required temperature, and it takes a long time to use.
6. Portability
Garment steamer: Many steamers are designed to be lightweight and suitable for travel or business trips.
Iron: Although there are portable irons, they are relatively large and require an ironing board, so they are not as convenient to carry and store as steamers.
7. Wrinkle removal effect
Garment steamer: Suitable for daily light wrinkle removal, the effect is relatively gentle, and it is good for minor wrinkles and thin clothes, but it may have limited effect on very stubborn wrinkles.
Iron: The wrinkle removal effect is more direct and powerful, especially for deeper or harder wrinkles. The clothes can be flattened by the high temperature bottom plate to make the effect more lasting.
Summary: Steamer is suitable for quick, convenient and easy daily use, especially for delicate, thin clothes or clothes that are not suitable for high temperature ironing, and does not require an ironing board.
Iron is suitable for clothes that require higher temperature and pressure to remove deep wrinkles, especially heavy fabrics and harder wrinkles, and usually requires an ironing board.
If you want to remove wrinkles quickly and keep it portable, a steam iron is a good choice; if your clothes are mostly thicker fabrics or require strong ironing, an iron may be more suitable.
